Frequently asked questions

  • Why and how do we fundraise?

Lifeline Queensland fundraise in a range of ways that allow us to reach the greatest number of people, including individuals, families, organisations and local communities who want to help make their communities safe from suicide. We appreciate the money, time and heart anyone is able to give in support of our 24-hour crisis support and suicide prevention services.

    We receive funds from:

    • Extraordinary people – our Community Circle of monthly giving supporters, those who choose to give a one-off donation when they can or include a gift in their Will, our community fundraising event participants, those who choose to shop in our stores, at our events or online, and those who sign up for training with us.
    • corporate partners
    • state and federal government
    • trusts, foundations and grants

    We fundraise:

    • online (through emails, social media and our websites)
    • over the phone
    • by sending mail
    • in our stores
    • at events

If you’re ever unsure if a fundraiser is legitimate, give our Supporter Experience team a call on 1800 961 881 or email us at fundraising@lifelineqld.org.au.

  • Do we use telephone fundraising?

Yes, we do use telephone fundraising. This type of fundraising allows us to raise money in a cost-effective way, as well as engage in thousands of conversations with supporters of Lifeline Queensland.

This form of fundraising gives more people the opportunity to ask questions about our work and discuss the different ways in which they can support Lifeline’s services here in Queensland.

We will only call you if you’ve given us consent to do so. We do not take part in ‘cold’ calling. However, if you no longer wish to receive calls from us, are unsure whether a call you’ve received is legitimate or if you’re unhappy with any aspect of a call that you have received, please contact our Supporter Experience team on 1800 961 881 or at fundraising@lifelineqld.org.au.

We work with a professional, ethical tele-fundraising agency called Clever Contacts. We are currently running a few telephone fundraising campaigns with Clever Contacts at this time.

    Together, we ensure that:

    • all fundraisers have intensive training and receive regular briefing sessions to ensure that they are working to best practice and to the charity’s guidelines set out by the ACNC and FIA.
    • we regularly monitor and review all tele-fundraising calls to ensure we’re respecting and understanding the people we talk to.
    • every agency we work with complies with the Australian Privacy Principles, as well other relevant State legislation, when dealing with your personal information.

Our professional tele-fundraisers are paid to fundraise on our behalf. However, 100% of all donations given in support of Lifeline Queensland are used to develop and run Lifeline’s vital support and suicide prevention services. Our fundraising costs are covered by UnitingCare services in Queensland that have fees associated with them, and investments like any other business.

Our fundraisers and our partners at Clever Contacts are required to follow rules set out by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) and are members of the Fundraising Institute of Australia. We want to make sure you feel informed and empowered with the way you choose to give and never feel pressured to give if you are unable to. We want everyone’s experience with Lifeline Queensland to be the best possible experience while we raise funds for life-saving services.

  • How do you check if any type of fundraising is a scam?

While we would love to see all technology used to make the world a better place, some people use technology to mirror charities - but who don’t have the charities important cause at heart. Lifeline Queensland is a registered Australian charity under UnitingCare Community as part of UnitingCare Queensland. We follow all fundraising and government legislation.

Our mail and email fundraising will always have the Lifeline brand on it, communicate with you from an official Lifeline Queensland email address such as fundraising@lifelineqld.org.au, and direct you to our website – lifelineqld.org.au, fundraise.lifelineqld.org.au, walkthetalkforlifeline.org.au or lifelinegivingday.com.au – or one of its landing pages for more information or to donate. If you see, read or hear something that you think isn’t quite right and want to check it with us – we’d definitely like to know too – reach out to our Supporter Experience team on 1800 961 881 or fundraising@lifelineqld.org.au.

  • What do we do with the information you give us?

Here at UnitingCare Queensland (although you may only know us as Lifeline Queensland), we know how much you value your privacy while looking for ways to support the mental health of your community. We want you to know that we give the same level of importance to protecting the personal information that you provide to us when donating, fundraising, shopping, volunteering and using our services and websites.

We know that reading a privacy policy isn’t the most thrilling or inspiring thing to do, but it is a very important document, which you can read over on our Privacy Policy page.

We love being able to communicate with you about the different ways you can support the mental health of your community but if you change your mind and no longer wish to receive communications from us, you can:

    • Follow the opt-out (sometimes also known as “manage subscription” or “unsubscribe”) instruction in the emails we send you.
    • If you have opted into receiving text messages from us and wish to opt out, you can follow the opt-out instruction in that specific text message if you wish to opt-out.
    • To update your communication preferences for all things donating and fundraising you can contact us at fundraising@lifelineqld.org.au.
