How to help people in crisis

The Accidental Counsellor Foundations Workshop will provide you with necessary skills and tools to be able to step into the shoes of an accidental counsellor momentarily, respond appropriately, efficiently and effectively to people in crisis or distress when there may not be a professional immediately available.

In this 1-day workshop, we ask participants to reflect on personal values and beliefs and how they influence interactions with others. How you respond will create an impact on the person in need of support or assistance and often determine the outcome of your interactions.

Participants gain a greater understanding of how to communicate more effectively and learn strategies to help foster effective and trusting relationships with clients or peers. The workshop is flexible and interactive, encouraging participants to ask questions, share their experiences, practice skills and engage in self-reflection.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the course participants are likely to expect to:

  • be familiar with basic counselling skills
  • understand the foundations of developing effective helping techniques
  • develop strategies for dealing with people in crisis and those displaying challenging behaviours
  • have practised the skills they have learnt
  • have an understanding of the need for self-care

Please note: The Accidental Counsellor Foundations course does not qualify you to be a counsellor or provide ongoing support. Participants will not receive any counselling qualification at the end of this training.
