Lifeline Brisbane Bookfest on hold amid rising COVID-19 cases

January 6, 2022

Lifeline’s January 2022 Bookfest has been postponed in light of the unfolding COVID-19 situation in South East Queensland.

The Lifeline Brisbane Bookfest was set to take place at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from Saturday 15 - 23 January.

This is the third Brisbane Bookfest impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, putting enormous strain on the ongoing financial support to Queensland’s Lifeline Crisis Support Services.

Preparations for the upcoming event were well advanced, however, the difficult decision to place the event on hold is in the community’s best interest given the recent rise in COVID-19 cases.

Lifeline Retail General Manager, Jamie Mackay, stated it was disappointing not being able to hold the event as planned, but knew it was the best way to proceed.

“We understand there’s much anticipation for this event, however our primary concern is the health and safety of customers, volunteers and team members,” he said.

“Brisbane Bookfest is incredibly important in raising funds for our Lifeline Crisis Support Services, which are hugely in demand as our community continues to deal with this evolving situation.

“It is with deep sadness that we are postponing the January Bookfest, and we know it is disappointing for our customers and all our volunteers who have worked so hard preparing.”

“While we can’t hold the event at this time, we are calling on our the entire community to continue showing their support for Lifeline where they can, such as making a donation, visiting one of our many shops throughout Queensland, or shopping at Lifeline’s online shop.”

Mr Mackay said the team were looking forward to connecting with the Bookfest community, and thanked everyone for their support during this time.

“I can’t thank our amazing Bookfest team enough. They have rallied together to get the event to this point, and I know Brisbane Bookfest will be back with a huge bang when it returns,” he said.

Mr Mackay said the Lifeline team would continue to monitor the situation over the coming weeks, with further announcements on new dates expected in the future.
